i want, so i will. part 2

If you are reading this you most likely read part one of this blog post series. If not it makes sense to have a quick read before you continue with this update.

Do only what you want to do.

Sounds cool, doesn’t it? Just do what you want to do and not what you have to do and you’ll be a happy individual. Easy.

Actually, this rule attracts a lot of criticism simply because most people believe this fosters narcissistic and egoistic behaviour. If we all did what we want to do we’d end up as a self-centred society with a bunch of self-loving morons. Labkovsky himself says that people – who for the first time hear this advice think it is a call for anarchy. Note that Labkovsky never stated that others need to be ignored.

As a matter of fact, if you consider yourself a good person, you can do what you want simply because the actions of a good person are in harmony with the interests of the people around them.

That’s one of the reasons why Labkovsky states that this approach should be taught to kids from early childhood.

Such questions as “What do you want to do now?” “What do you want to eat?” “What do you want to wear today?” are the first steps.

For some reason, everyone implies that if you live the way you want you will disadvantage the people around you. Others confuse ‘do what you want’ with ‘be selfish’. There is a huge difference. A selfish person doesn’t accept himself and can’t settle.

The problem is that not all of us were brought up like this and as a result we now have avalanches of people struggling with or leaving their long term jobs, partners, whole lifestyles and what not.

Just google books for self-help, happiness, motivation, or meaningful life and you’ll see what I mean. Stats for depression and anxiety are through the roof and it no longer just impacts adults.

So give it a go. Before you question your whole life ask yourself:

What do I want to do today?

Watch this space for my next blog post re rule 2 – “don’t do what you don’t want to do” (yes, there is a difference) and in the meantime leave me a comment and let me know what you think.

Thanks for reading 😘
